Who are we?

We’re a couple in our early (MrsSLM) to mid (MrSLM) 30’s living in Montreal, Canada, who are thinking really seriously about “retiring” in the next few years. This isn’t something we just started planning for though, we’ve been saving and investing since our early 20’s and at this point I don’t think we’re more than a few years off.

So why blog about it?

One thing I’ve noticed about a lot of blogs and early retirement communities is that many seem to fall into the “hardcore” category. I guess what I mean is that the writers seem a lot more extreme than we’re willing to be. We want to be retired, but not by cutting everything down to the bone with no frills. In the end it was just a bit difficult to relate to some of their experiences and apply them to our own lives.

We like some frills 🙂 We’re not crazy with our spending, you won’t see us upgrading yearly to the newest iphone, or shopping at Hermès. But we DO enjoy eating out once in a while, going for a walk to the hipster coffee place, or booking a vacation at an all-inclusive resort. We enjoy living in a nice area in a big city. I’m sure many of you feel the same way, and so there’s value in writing about our specific experiences and journey to independence. There’s no one way to live, or one way to reach financial independence.

Lastly, at least up until now, early retirement was this sort of nebulously defined concept. We knew wanted it, but by writing here and keeping this blog updated it’ll force us to actually make our goals concrete and figure out what exactly it is we want and what need.
